Looking to open up shop soon – should i spend as much as i can for initial marketing?

Wondering if i should start small and grow organically – using free/cheaper plans for marketing. But now im thinking of spending a bit more on initial marketing (big contests, referral rewards, gift cards to first x subscribers, etc) and capture as many emails as possible.

Maybe the initial hit on marketing will pay off over time?

Or start smaller, dont go crazy on giveaways, and refine my shop based on initial feedback?
